Following the collaborative efforts of diverse stakeholders, the Global Centre of Excellence on Climate Adaptation (GCECA) was established in the Netherlands in order to accelerate climate adaptation by recognizing, building and promoting excellence among all relevant stakeholder groups around the world. As an initiating partner, the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) attended the launching event hosted by the government of the Netherlands in Bonn, Germany, during the 23rd Conference of the Parties (COP 23) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Dr. Yasuaki Hijioka, Head of the Center for Social and Environmental Systems Research at NIES, celebrated the launch of the center with Mrs. Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management of the Netherlands, and Ms. Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary UNFCCC. In the event, Dr. Hijioka stated that NIES expects to work closely with GCECA through the sharing of knowledge and experience regarding adaptation to a changing climate.
