Project Outline

This project seeks to support the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) in strengthening the adaptive capacities of coastal communities, especially women, to cope with impacts of climate change-induced salinity on their livelihoods and water security, by addressing information, technical, and financial/institutional barriers to implementing and managing resilient livelihoods and drinking water solutions for vulnerable communities in the southwestern coastal districts of Khulna and Satkhira.

Project Description

< Major Project Components>

  1. Enhancement of climate resilient livelihoods and value chains in coastal agricultural communities, focusing on women (participatory mapping for livelihood portfolio through five workshops, formation and reactivation of 1,017 Women Livelihood Groups, procurement of inputs, and business skills development).
  2. Promoting access to safe and reliable climate resilient drinking water, focusing on women (water collection and treatment system, etc.).
  3. Institutional capacity building for climate risk management of livelihoods and drinking water security.

Expected total number of direct and indirect beneficiaries, disaggregated by gender (reduced vulnerability or increased resilience):

  1. Direct beneficiaries: 245,516 persons (50.2% of total beneficiaries will be female)
  2. Indirect beneficiaries: 473,713 persons
    0.44% of the total population (16.25% of the population of the two target districts)
